“Listen, React, and Have a Blast!” with Marty Burtwell

We got to chat with the one and only Marty Burtwell! He’s a stand-up comic who decided to try improv for fun once moving to San Diego, and he decided to stick around (he’s in Level 4!) for the community, support and performance opportunities! About Marty: This left-handed Pisces hails from Vancouver, Canada. He moved to San Diego about 10 months ago. When it comes to hobbies and interests, Finest City Improv tops the list! Others include hot yoga, playing slo pitch, basketball, and he’s always trying to do the next right thing.

“Go Big!” with Monica Royal

Monica’s story is one of my favorites. After standing out with her shining personality in our Free Discover Improv class, we were so sad to see her walk out without signing up. We finished clean up and heard a banging on the door. “SIGN ME UP NOW BEFORE I REGRET IT!” (I think there were some other words that we can’t quite publish here included in this.) She had walked to her car and convinved herself that this bold, brave, push wasn’t for her, but didn’t feel right without just going for it. Now, she says that decision changed … Read More

Being in the moment with Skyler Lee!

Skyler is the kinda guy who makes you smile just by being in his presence. He has completed all of our core classes, currently rocks out with Musical Improv, and plays regularly on conservatory team “Where’s Brenda?”, as well as FCI’s featured show: Attack Of The Rotten Tomatoes. Skyler’s dedication to the theatre is surely undisputed; he even moved and changed jobs to be closer to the theatre. After seeing his first show at FCI (Redneck Romeo And Juliet), he enrolled that very evening. Skyler’s photography and track-scratchin’ skills have earned him a spot on indie team WerKKreW, composed … Read More

Embrace who you are with October spotlight, Hannah Jones!

We feel so lucky to have answered the call when a North Carolina gal was moving out west and wanted to find her new hometown theatre. She has a journey unlike most as she didn’t join Finest City as a brand new performer, but rather someone with lots of experience. So how did FCI stack up against other theatres she had trained with? She attributes our amazing and welcoming community as the reason why she felt so acclamated to her new town so quickly. When she’s not helping us run our tech, or selling organic fruit (seriously!), she rocks … Read More

From Podcast to Performer: It’s Tommie’s Community Spotlight!

Tommie is one beautiful lady in charge! How did she sharpen her communication skills, become a better listener, and find her inner strength? With Improv of course! “My only regret about Improv is that I wish I would’ve found it sooner in my life.  The lessons that I’m learning from scene work that can be applied to my personal life is invaluable.  If anyone out there identifies with being a workaholic or a perfectionist they should not think one minute longer if they need to enroll in a class!  DO IT NOW.” This gangsta rap-lovin’, red wine-drinkin’, Kansas-raised performer is … Read More

Say Yes! And…to Life with Community Spotlight Amir Razeghi

Amir is an amazing blessing to our community. An aero-engineer by day, Amir came to Finest City to have fun and meet new friends. What he found along the way was not just a community, but a family that helped him grow. “Every weekend, I find myself here at shows, and I get excited to come in and see familiar faces greet me,” he shares, “everyone here is family.” It’s easy to feel happy around Amir. With his open heart and warm smile, he quickly bonded with his classmates, and they still perform regularly together since their level 1 class. … Read More

Feel the vibes with July Community Spotlight: Jessica Farber!

Jessica is one of the most kind, down to earth, and kinetic people that we could have ever asked to join our community. One night after visiting her dad at the Lafayette Hotel, she noticed Finest City Improv’s sign and considered it a literal one from the universe to get into a class here. She signed up that night on the spot! She has completed all core classes, Conservatory, musical improv, and clowning. She is also one of 2017’s newest coaches. Improv for her is part of a spiritual journey, helping her continue to grow, and meet people that support … Read More

Improv is Bloomin’ with June’s Student Spotlight: Kevin Espiritu!

Kevin’s a guy that likes to get his hands dirty– when he’s not on stage, you will find him deep in his garden or solving puzzles for fun. So you know he approaches improv the same way–diving in and using his brain! He will be graduating in just a few short days from the FCI training center Core program and will likely not be far from the stage after that. You will see him around Friday nights supporting some of his favorite teams and sharing a laugh with his tight knit community. Kevin has been nothing but an amazing student, … Read More

Smile More with May’s Student Spotlight: Angellyne De Perio!

We were so thrilled to be able to sit down with the one and only Angellyne to interview her on her creative journey she has embarked on through improv. She has graduated the FCI program, is involved in our sketch program, and can often be seen at shows or workshops. Her class had the one and only Jesse Suphan as their level 1 teacher, and she attributes their success to his energy and involvement (he is now their post graduation coach!) When she’s not on stage, she is working from home in her PJs with Netflix, Hulu or Shaun of the … Read More
